In your observations--have you seen fasting for two days a week (or similar) to achieve a cut deficit work in lieu of tracking calories? Or do people find a way to fuck it up anyway without measurement...

thanks for breaking this down in a sensible simple way. i never considered this as I was always unconsciously trying to gaintain which has never produced meaningful results. starting from 1st principles on everything in life is a good way to yield max results.

I've been hesitating on sending you this but with the recent CICO discussion I thought it could provide context on the different weight loss philosophy's and their blind spot. As they say everyone holds a piece of the truth, but no one has the full truth, and the pieces of truth held are different sizes.

This is a 5-part series of articles on weight loss (only Part 1 is linked). My old engineering college professor wrote these several years ago and I still find them insightful, as he approaches weight loss from "value-meme" perspective. He is still active on Twitter and generally friendly if you decide to reach out.

The tl;dr is weight loss is complicated and most weight loss advice stops at calories in/calories out (blaming fat people for not controlling themselves and eating too much) or food quality, with the role of empathy and psycho-social factors as a huge and mostly unacknowledged blind spot.

Off to a weird start on a cut…

I cut 75 lbs, maintained for a while, then slowly added 25 lbs on a bulk.

Then, reduced 400 calories to maintenance and held steady.

Reduced 400 more to start the cut and in 10 days I’ve gained a lb. I know I’m in a deficit because I’m meticulous with my eating and I can feel the change in my lifts and how hungry I am.

Is it common to stall or hold on to water weight to start a cut? I can drop more calories but I don’t want to get too aggressive too fast and be eating nothing by the time I get to the bottom of the cut.
