Very interesting points. I believe to a certain extent, even elite athletes and performers do have some negative self-selection. For example, Federer has arguably elevated the entire game of tennis during the 2000s. Would other top 10 players have played as well if he hadn't been around?
Same for record breakers. There needs to be that one person who pushes beyond that one limit, and then all of a sudden everyone else can do it too.
Of course, you could probably include the Ranger program among the elite athletic programs as well. Participants also get some advice to not quit on themselves, as you said.
Very well said! Your post made me think about the power of momentum. I've found that if I can just establish a little momentum, everything seems a little easier, a little more achievable. And, you can build some momentum in just 2 or 3 days. Raise your expectations. Ignore everyone else. Every good decision means more and has a compounding impact.
Thanks for this post, Ox. As someone who was on the fitness sidelines for a long time, I was thinking about the significance of a message like this. Getting fit isn’t a leap of faith, it is a test of will. I think there’s comfort in that. “Do X get Y” - a guaranteed outcome if you check the right boxes on a long enough timeline. Self-doubt, as a perceived barrier to entry, can be eliminated. It is empowering.
Reading worth it. Very understated topic to begin with. We are all obsessed with the idea of winning and becoming successful. Sadly, very few achieve that goal. Consistency plays a big role in our journey to achieving greatness or expertise in a particular field, in addition to that, our wiring equally plays a big role in reaching our said goals.
Its such a basic idea, that people have a hard time explaining. For example, if you look at celebrities say an athlete, or a racer, when asked how did you become what you are now? They seem puzzled.
All they did was practice the same thing thousands of times.
Just like Dan Koe said "Everyone wants the quick fix but nobody realizes the quickest fix is the longest path."
Yes, it’s even more important as you age, find a qualified trainer if unsure what to do

Looking back at my log book or steps on my phone reinforces what I need to do today. “Starting tomorrow” would be a massive waste now!
Thank you so much for this Ox! Everyone feels like this at some point so it’s nice to see that we’re not alone and that improvement is possible.
Glad the kid is all right man, never want to hear that
Good post. Hope mama & baby are happy & healthy!
